Defense First

This drill works great with a 10- or 12-man team, but can be done with any number of players. We have a 10-man team.
We line two players up at each position: 3B, SS, 2B, 1B and C (if you have 12, you can put the extra 2 at P). Start
off with the coach hitting one to 3B, he makes the play to 1B, and 1B throws home, then moves on around the infield
to each position. When the 1B turn comes up, he fields the ground ball, tags his bag and fires to 3B.
To keep everybody busy when the ball is hit to the active player, the one waiting behind "plikes" (or "plays like")
he is fielding and throwing the ball, as well. This player is practicing getting his butt down and following the ball
into his glove with the BILLL OF HIS CAP.
You can also spice it up with hitting one to each position and turning two. After the 1B receives the ball, he then
fires to 3B, and 3B fires home. All throws come with a sense of urgency, teaching them to get rid of the ball with
accuracy. This method really works well because everybody is involved on each ground ball. Our kids enjoy this drill
at the beginning of each practice because it allows all kids to play different positions, and we like all of our players
to know every position on the field.
DEFENSE FIRST! If you can't get them out, you may never get to bat.
