Execution Drill

June 2006

By: Kevin Gormley

This drill incorporates execution of signs given by the third base coach. Signs used are Hit and Run, SacrificeBunt, Bunt, Steal, Fake Bunt Steal, and Slap Bunt. The drill will also incorporate defense and pitching. This drill is done in a live game situation. Hitters will see live pitching and have to execute the sign they are given.

All positions need to be filled for this drill. Pitchers will rotate after three batters. A runner is placed at first base for every at bat, can also be put at first and second. Pitchers are allowed to pick off runners as well. The count on the batter is set at 1-1 or 2-1. Signs are given by the coach to the batter and runner. Coaches must also decide what bunt defense the team is to be in. Batters are given one chance to execute the sign per at bat, usually given three at bats total. After the players three at bats they will rotate with a player in the field. All players should get a chance to bat.

Certain signs may take more than one pitch to execute. The bunt or the slap bunt should only de done when a strike is thrown by the pitcher, so the batter may have to take the pitch. This also means the runner must read the ball on those signs. Also, when these signs are given runners must get back to the bag to avoid being back picked by the catcher first base, this is also a great time to work on back picks on missed bunts. When the steal sign is given batters must read the runners jump, if it was a great jump the batter must take the pitch, bad jump at least swing to try and foul the ball off. Fake bunt steal is used to get the infielders moving by showing bunt and the runner is going on the pitchers first movement. Sac bunt and hit and runs are also straight steals with a look back after the third or fourth step for the runner to see where the ball isDid the sac bunt get down? Is it a fly ball? Or, was it a swing/bunt and miss?

Good Luck!.
