Quick Hands Drill

September 2005

By: Deke Berchtold

Equipment: Ball and Gloves

This drill is done in groups of four, and can be done against each other in competition with the losing team doing push-ups or anything of your choosing. There are four steps or stages to this drill.

  1. Stage one is bare handed.
    • Position the players in a square about eight feet apart. The object is to move the ball around the square in a clockwise direction, as quickly as possible, using an underhand toss with one or two hands, as if it were a flip from the second baseman to shortstop.
    • You are teaching hand/eye coordination;
    • To catch and throw the ball;
    • Where to deliver the ball to your teammate;
    • Quickness and footwork comes into play when you go counter clockwise.
    • I have players start at one person and go around three or four times with the person who started the drill announcing when he has completed the three rounds. You can do this drill many different times allowing instruction in the middle. Players of all ages will enjoy this drill…especially if there is competition.
  2. Stage two – is the same drill with bare hands only going counter clockwise. This involves footwork to make the turn.
  3. Stage three – is with gloves on and going clockwise.
  4. Stage four – is with gloves on going counter clockwise.
