"T-Ball" Drill (for the beginner)
This drill comes from Leo Daniels our June 2004 Drill of the Month Winner.
Equipment: Balls and Gloves
Often, many of drills are developed for more older, stronger players. Very little is done for the new boys and girls to the game.
I am sure you have observed a ball hit into the outfield and all 15 players go running and diving for the ball. A huge pile up occurs and the hitter (runner) circles the base while the defensive players fight for the ball.
DRILL:
Have four to five players stand in a straight line with their back to the outfield fence. They must close their eyes and listen closely.
The coach will then toss the ball behind them. The players hear where the ball hits. The coach says go, and they all run to the ball. The rule is the first player to the ball gets to pick it up and fire (throw) it back to the infield. I count one thousand and one and before I count to one thousand and two the player must throw the ball before I can get two out.
The drill teaches them to listen, get to the ball first, don’t fight over the ball, and release the ball in a very quick manner.
You can have three or four sets of players doing this at one time. The players love the drill and it can be used to help break up practice a little bit.
I have even had the moms on the field to chase the ball. The boys and girls love beating their moms!
