"The Wall" Drill
Needed: A wall and some balls.
This drill comes from John Turpin, Cypress, CA, our December 1999 Drill of the Month Winner.
Step 1
Start by having players form a line, one behind another about 15-20' from the wall.(This can vary depending on the age of the players) Have the first player throw the ball against the wall, then turn and leave in the direction he/she normally throws the ball and return to the end of the line.
Step 2
The next player in line fields the ball and returns to the end of the line. Make sure the players are using the proper fielding mechanics while the drill is being executed.(Head down, legs bent, and eyes on the ball all the way into the glove)
Hint: After a few rounds of this you can make it fun for the kids by making it competitive. Have them form 2 lines instructing them to always turn to the outside to return to the back of the line to avoid a collision. They now can compete with the other players in the opposite line. Again instilling the importance of proper mechanics. With repetition, their time and technique will improve. Add a incentive to the kids with the best time or mechanics. Coaches use your imagination, and remember when it is fun for the kids, they will remember it and enjoy it.
