Short Toss Drill

Needed: Two players, Instant screen, Lite-Flite balls

Step 1

Player 1 stands ready to hit approximately six-eight feet in front of the Instant Screen. Player 2 stands behind the Instant Screen with his/her face and body completely covered by the screen. If they are left-handed they stand on the left side; right handers will stand on the right side.

Step 2

Player 2 will toss a Lite Flite ball using a short arm "dart toss" to a specific location in the strike zone. Player 1 will attempt to hit the ball to the proper area of the Instant Screen. (i.e., pitches on the outside part of the plate should be driven to the hitters opposite field.)

This drill gives the hitter an idea of where to make contact with different pitch locations and achieve the desired results. The drill can be performed in a small area indoors or outdoors. The close proximity of the two players helps the thrower to hit the desired area of the strike zone more frequently than if they were further apart. That makes it a very efficient drill.
